This class is for Lifeguard candidates who do not have a current Lifeguard certification or whose certification has expired. This class is a blended learning program requiring time at home to complete online assignments. Once registered immediately write an email to [email protected], in the subject write Lifeguard Pretest to schedule your pretest [at least 8 day prior]. Upon completion of the pretest you will be given your online link. Participants can expect to spend approximately six to eight hours to complete the online portion. ALL ONLINE ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THE FIRST IN-CLASS SESSION. Students successfully completing the course will receive a certification in First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and American Red Cross Lifeguard.

PRECOURSE SWIM TEST:
o Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest, face in the water at all times except when taking a quick breath.
o You may wear goggles.
o Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards/meter using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted.)
o Move away from the wall and tread water only using legs. Head must always stay above the water.
o Swim 50 yard/meters using front crawl, breastroke or a combination of both.
o Start in the water, swim 20 yards using freestyle and breaststroke, surface dive to 12 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point holding the object with both hands and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, all within one minute and 40 seconds.

Bring to class: Swimsuit, towel and CPR mask (may be purchased
for $15.00).

Once registered IMMEDIATELY [within 72 hours of registration or you will be removed from the class] write an email to [email protected], in the subject write Lifeguard Pretest to schedule your pretest [at least 8 day prior]. An aquatics staff member will get in touch with you to schedule your pretest. Candidates must pass the IN WATER pretest to remain on the roster and enrolled in the class. Failure to show these skills will result in our immediate removal from this certification class. Taking the pretest earlier allows you to have more time to complete your online portion.

To register and participate all swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards on their front and 25 yards on their back in order to qualify for this program without stopping or putting your feet down. All swimmers must be registered to participate in practices. All NEW swimmers should set up a Try Out time prior to attending their first practice. The City Swordfish Swim Team participates in the Jefferson Swim League [JSL] from End of May through July. We participate in 6 Dual Meets on WEDNESDAYS and sometimes TUESDAYS with all swimmers required to participate in at least 2 swim meets. HOME meets will be held June 12 Hollymead, June 18 [Tues] Forest Lakes, June 26 Farmington at Washington Park Pool and AWAY meets are scheduled for July 2 [Tues] at Key West, July 10 at Green Hills, July 17 at Lake Monticello this upcoming 2024 season. The CHAMPS end of the season SWIM MEET will be held Friday, July 26 and Saturday, July 27 Brooks Family YMCA [4 sessions offered over 2 days/session determined by age].

Registration will begin, Tuesday, May 21 online, in person, and over the phone with a credit card at 10am. Payment is required at the time of registration.
Parent Orientation will be held sometime after our season begins - TBA - be on the lookout for more information that will be sent to families via the Swordfish Family Gmail account providing this information on sign up, precautions, and other pertinent questions or concerns.

*Practices while City Schools in session May 28 - June 7 [M-F] 4-4:45pm AND 5-5:45pm [no practice June 6 Graduation]. Please pick 1 block of time to practice and arrive on time.

All swimmers must be registered and have completed paperwork on file in order to participate in this program.
