This class is for candidates who possess a current Lifeguard certification or whose certification has expired within 30 days of the start date of class. If your expiration date is 30 days or less you may take this course. Due to new Lifeguarding materials this class is a blended learning program requiring time at home to complete online assignments. Once registered immediately write an email to [email protected], in the subject write Lifeguard Pretest to schedule your pretest [at least 8 day prior]. Upon completion of the pretest you will be given your online link. Participants can expect to spend approximately six to eight hours to complete the online portion. ALL ONLINE ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO THE FIRST IN-CLASS SESSION. Students successfully completing the course will receive a certification in First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and American Red Cross Lifeguard.

PRECOURSE SWIM TEST:
Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest, face in the water at all times except when taking a quick breath.
You may wear goggles.
1-Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards/meter using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted.)
Move away from the wall and tread water only using legs. Head must always stay above the water. Swim 50 yard/meters using front crawl, breastroke or a combination of both.

2-Start in the water, swim 20 yards using freestyle and breaststroke, surface dive to 12 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point holding the object with both hands and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, all within one minute and 40 seconds.

Bring to class: Swimsuit, towel and CPR mask (may be purchased
for $15.00).

Once registered IMMEDIATELY [within 72 hours of registration or you will be removed from the class] write an email to [email protected], in the subject write Lifeguard Pretest to schedule your pretest [at least 8 day prior]. An aquatics staff member will get in touch with you to schedule your pretest. Candidates must pass the IN WATER pretest to remain on the roster and enrolled in the class. Failure to show these skills will result in our immediate removal from this certification class. Taking the pretest earlier allows you to have more time to complete your online portion. Bring your current Lifeguard certification to the pretest.

The Learn-to-Skate class is specifically tailored for those with no prior skateboarding experience. These brand-new skaters will focus on the foundational skills of skateboarding. The main goal is to become confident while riding in the skate park environment. Progression objectives: skateboard safety, balance, navigation and board control. This class emphasizes the importance of creative play, working together and making new friends. All abilities are welcome. Skateboards, pads, and helmets are provided to use for lessons. The Intermediate class is for skaters who have a solid understanding of the foundational mainstays of skateboarding. They are proficient in all the elements of the Learn-to-Skate class and can now ride and navigate the flat areas of the skate park with ease and confidence. In the Intermediate level, riders will enhance their navigation skills while learning how to utilize ramps and embankments. They will also learn how to pump transition and eventually drop into bowls and ramps. Progression objectives: tail control, skating banks, pumping transitions, carving bowls and dropping into ramps.

The Parent-and-Me class is specifically tailored for those with no prior skateboarding experience, or for parents who have skated years ago but now want to skate with their kids in this amazing new skate park, or for kids who want their parents to skate with them at this amazing new skate park. Or for any other family members who want to understand how to support their brand-new skaters. Skaters will focus on learning skateboarding foundational skills with the support of family members who learn alongside them. The main goal is to become confident while riding in the skate park environment. Progression objectives: skateboard safety, balance, navigation and board control. This class emphasizes the importance of creative play, working together and making new friends. All abilities are welcome. Each family registers only once to reserve a spot.

Homeschool Skateboarding, Parents & Kids class is specifically tailored for those with no prior skateboarding experience. These brand-new skaters will focus on the foundational skills of skateboarding. The main goal is to become confident while riding in the skate park environment. Progression objectives: skateboard safety, balance, navigation and board control. This class emphasizes the importance of creative play, working together and making new friends. All abilities are welcome.

Join us as we celebrate happily-ever-after. Come dressed as your favorite princess - real or imagined! We will engage in light conversation during tea, then create beautiful works of art fit for royalty. Think pink and glitter and everything princess!

Come join us for our exciting Winter Break Camp where you will meet new friends, play games, explore new activities and enjoy fun field trips. Open to students ages 5-12. Please provide your child's lunch and snack each day. Program details will be emailed to participants before camp begins. You must have a valid email address on file and enroll in ePACT (a secure emergency network that we use to collect medical and emergency contact information electronically) prior to the first day of camp.
*No camp on Tuesday, December 24, Wednesday, December 25, and Thursday, December 26.

As we move into the winter months we will make a winter Centerpiece. All supplies will be provided. Come and have fun.

Calling all parents! Enjoy an evening off while the kids have fun! This drop off event invites children ages 5-12 to participate in a night of fun activities including gym time and arts & crafts led by Recreation staff. Pizza and drinks are included. All children must be potty-trained. Advanced registration is required. Walk-ins will not be accepted.

Join us once a month to visit and support local restaurants in the community. We will enjoy great conversation, build friendships, and practice various life skills. Participants will be responsible for their own meals, so be sure to bring money as we will practice money management and other important monetary life skills. Staff will be available for assistance. Restaurant will be decided closer to date of program. Pick-up and Drop-off will be at Crow Recreation Center.

Spend the afternoon with your friends going out to eat and seeing a movie. Movie will be decided closer to the date of the showing. Lunch & movie ticket are included but bring extra money for snacks at the movies. Please note, program times may vary slightly due to available show times and transportation is not provided. Drop off and pick up will be at various theater locations in Charlottesville.

Join your Adaptive Recreation friends for an afternoon of fun together. We will meet at Key Recreation Center, have lunch together on the downtown mall, then enjoy a live performance of "The Wizard of Oz." Pick-up will be out front of the Live Arts Theater. Lunch & Show ticket are included in Registration. Bring money for snacks/drinks at theater. Pick up and drop off will be at Crow Recreation Center.

Join your Adaptive Recreation friends for a morning of music & culture from around the world. We will be using various rhythm instruments, dancing, and expressive arts throughout this program. Class will be held at Washington Park. Bring a packed lunch or snack with you. After music class, we will all enjoy lunch together.

Come out and celebrate the upcoming Holiday season with your Adaptive Recreation friends. We will be creating various Holiday crafts to use as gifts for our friends and loved ones. Each participant will be able to make a few items to take home with them and use as Holiday gifts. Drop-off and Pick-up will be at Washington Park.

Join us to work up a sweat while dancing with your friends. This class will be taught by a UVA Student, but Adaptive Staff will be present for support. Learn new dance moves, show off your favorite moves, and share laughs with friends as we use dance as a means of exercise and keep us moving.

Join us for The GardenFest of Lights at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens and dinner. A one-of-a-kind walking experience through the gardens at Lewis Ginter. The Gardens will be decorated full of Holiday Lights, botanical decorations, and model trains. We will eat inside the Gardens at the local Diner. Please note, the trail is outside, and participants should be prepared to walk for up to 1.5 hours and you will need to dress for the weather.

This class will be taught by UVA Medical Students with support of Adaptive Recreation Staff. Come out and enjoy a group dinner, socialize, and learn something new.
